inaugural Toronto Tasting 2008/05/16 20:43 Karma: 0
We're having our first Toronto Tequila Tasting here in Toronto, ON on June 7th. It's going to be a smallish affair (~15 of us) with some of the folks bringing some treasures they got on a recent Tequila Tour (notably from Casa Noble and 4 Copas).

In preparation for that I was hoping to shoot over to the Buffalo area to grab some decent Tequila (there is virtually non here in Ontario, despite the fact that the Liquor Control Board of Ontario is the single largest purchaser of alcohol in North America). Does anyone know of any places that are more likely to have some of the finer tequilas in stock?

thanks!

Oh, And I'll let you all know how the event goes... of course, if you want to come up to Toronto I'm sure we can work something out as well!

It's a blast hosting a tasting.

Just finished my second one a few weeks ago and tasted some great stuff. It's a great excuse to raid my collection.

The 4 Copas Reposado is pretty good. If you can get the Casa Noble Anejo (4 years) it's incredibly smooth. My in-laws call it medicinal tequila because they drink it every night before going to bed!!

Wish I could help you out in Buffalo, don't know much about the places there. Will online ship to you??? There's a Wine & Liquor Depot in California that has a great selection of tequilas at reasonable rates http://www.wineandliquordepot.com/index.htm

Would love to crash your party, let me know if there's anything I can do to support you with the event.

Enjoy Responsibly!!

Thanks! Our problem isn't so much getting things shipped here, it's having to pay ludicrous duties and taxes! A ~60 bottle will cost you over ~100 once you add the charges. Just not worth it.

Not when I can drive down across the border and only pay what the bottle is worth. (Of course with the price of gas suddenly even that isn't as 'convenient' as it used to be!)

As for supporting the event... hmmm... I'm not sure! Have you got any ideas?

So this past weekend a group of 13 Tequila devotees got together for our first Tequila Tasting in Toronto. It was a fabulous event and is sure to be the first of many... and I'm sure that we'll see these growing in size as well! It would have been great to have someone from the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) attend so that they could get a sense of what truly 'good' tequilas are really all about. Sadly the newest brands being carried by the LCBO - Corzo and El Mayor - didn't 'score well' in the tastings. And to add insult the LCBO doesn't carry standards like Casa Noble or 4 Copas or even trendy items (with very good contents!) like Voodoo Tiki!

Big thanks have to go to Casa Noble for arranging for us to have a full flight of their products to sample - and indeed, that's what Ian Chadwick used to kick off the formal part of the tasting. I'm hoping that some of the other distilleries will catch on to the growth of tequila appreciation up here in Canada and be able to kick in with samples or giveaways or whatever in the future.

Here's a list of what we had on hand...

- Para Mi B (for the pre-tasting margs)
- Casa Noble B, R, A
- Los Abuelos B
- Voodoo Tiki B, R
- Corzo, B
- El Mayor, R, A
- 1921 R
- Divino (Mezcal) R
- La Fogata (Mezcal) A
- 4 Copas R, A
- 7 Leguas D'Antaño EA
- Fina Estampa R
- MuchoTE R
- Querido Viejo A

(B=Blanco; R=Repo; A=Anejo; EA=Extra Anejo)
