Huge shout out to Erica at Yo Mama's Grill!!!
Here is your public service announcement. Go to Yo Mama's Grill when in New Orleans.
This is a town not known for tequila. Hell, with all the drinking going on, it's not known for much in the premium level. Well go to Yo Mama's and you won't be disappointed.
PLEASE don't make the mistake I made. For some reason, I was looking on S. Peters Sreet. As I walked the lonely road, I wondered about my safety and how a bar could be successful in the warehouse district of the city. Then when I looked closer, I saw the "T". It's St. Peters Street! BIG difference. In the heart of the quarter, it's not a flashy place. It's got all the opportunity, but serves mostly locals and has more than 50 tequilas to chose from.
Still not sure why they decided to go with the tequila theme, but THANK GOD!!! With all the hand grenades and hurricanes served in the quarter for the tourists it's an oasis for tequila drinkers looking for a bar to grab some refreshment and get away from the overhyped 3 for 1 drink specials.
Erica was my bartender and she is an angel. We went through the list of 50 tequilas and found a few I haven't tried before. I actually tasted the Hussong's Reposado which I've always been hesistant about because of the lack of the 100% agave label. My mistake. It's silky smooth feel and almost sweet flavor was superb for a tequila in the price range. It hasn't replaced Espolon as my favorite, but it's a great starter tequila for those thinking about getting into the tequila groove.
Please ask for for sangrita if you want it, because they do have it. Nice spice and tomatoe marry well with the tequila. If you're really nice and have had all the tequilas on the list, you may be treated with the home brew which the owner has aging in the bar. They claim it's American oak, but the tequila feels smooth and the taste is full of vanilla like French Oak. They won't tell you which tequila they started with, but it's great to think about which it could be.
Yo Mama's Grill is a local spot, but they will invite you in for some tequila tasting with no problem. It's definitely worth the stop and let them know The Tequila Guy sent you.
Enjoy Responsibly,
TTG
